Dr. Franco published an article on GoodTherapy.org reviewing the different types of trauma and their related diagnoses. Different situations lead to different types of trauma, and therefore the way the symptoms are expressed in adulthood varies. Dr. Franco writes,
We are … broadening our understanding to include the context of trauma and what it may mean for survivors. Issues such as the timing, nature (interpersonal or external), and occurrence (one-time, multiple, or lasting) can result in different diagnoses and considerations for treatment.
Complex trauma, interpersonal trauma, and developmental trauma all have lasting effects. Symptoms can damage a survivor’s ability to manage their emotions, cause low self-esteem, and affect their relationships.
