During a traumatic event, the parts of the brain responsible for memory are deliberately suppressed in order to help us cope emotionally in the short term. People who undergo traumatic events may struggle to fully remember them afterward. When trauma is ongoing, this can lead to issues with memory and dissociation down the line.
